Climbers: Stop littering!

Why would anyone, who wants to go to nature, leave trash behind?

I really don’t have an answer. It should be a very inconceivable thing to do yet there’s litter in the mountains.

Some do the opposite, and I’m especially proud to see a fellow Finn showing good example with his Black Diamond team. Although that’s partly a marketing act to make us wanting to buy BD gear, there are certainly also unselfish intentions behind it – well done Nalle & co!

Our local climbing club, Stonemonkeys Chillertal, did the same and had it’s members invited to a trash collecting event today. Great stuff – ten points to the people in charge!

The teams set off in the morning in drizzling rain with hopes to find nothing yet ready to pick everything. Indeed some of the crags and paths were clean – thanks to all who’ve been there without leaving a trace – but then again some places had enough to fill up a few big bags.

Most trash was found in the more popular areas. Not very surprising and one could say “of course”, but hey let’s turn the logic around and think that the more people visit a place, the more people there are to collect rubbish. It’s not a lot asked to give something back if one’s gone there in the first place to enjoy it, to get something.

Let’s still keep it cool and understand that not every müslibar wrap is there intentionally. Maybe it just slipped off a rucksack pocket after a snack break. Pick it up anyway and don’t be shy to show the move to others, making it a marketing act for the cause (or for your club) – that’s a legit thing to do.

It was worth going at all levels; good cause, good people, and even the weather turned out good in the end.

It was worth it at all levels; good cause, good people, and even good weather in the end.
